Check out some results from the twilight race in Athens. In the riders' own words....
I believe I finished 22 in the Greenway qualifier (4/5 35+). I had a good race and managed to stay at the front for most of it. I tried to cover as many attacks as I could. I was feeling great on the 2nd to last lap and tried to make a move. In the end, I just didn't have the legs to be a factor in the final sprint. It was a good experience. I'll make sure I save more for the sprint next time. But I had a lot of fun and enjoyed racing with the team. I think we had a pretty good showing. Trevor Stewart
As any self-respecting cycling I must qualify my results. I got 29th (or so) in the morning 4/5 crit...that after coming through turn 4 in 4th wheel then dropped my chain mixing it up trying to take the gutter up to the finish line. Not smart. Started, but did not finish the amateur final. John Best
Greenway: I placed 6th in my first men's 35+ cat 4/5 criterium. I felt pretty good throughout the race and hung out in the back of the field of ~30 guys observing and basically attempting to stay out of any crashes, of which i witnessed 3. While Trevor led the pack and picked up the pace on the 2nd to last lap, Kevin got nudged, hopped a curb, and went head-over in an ant hill about 100m before the final lap...ouch! On the uphill of the final lap I was still quite a ways in the back of the pack but made my way up to the front and pulled off 6th place.
Dowtown: What an experience thrill to ride downtown!...although I lasted about 9 mins before getting pulled. The pace was brutal and I used similar tactics as the morning race and stayed in the back with some other team mates. This was a pretty dumb idea since the field was about 100 guys, and we got spread out almost immediately. After getting stuck behind a couple crashes and not taking the free lap, i was basically done. Had I taken the frree lap I probably could been in the race for maybe 2 more minutes :-P Apparently, some ex-Pro from Myogenesis cleaned house on that race. Chad Stanton
22nd on the Greenway and a big ole Crashy DNF downtown. That's crits, right? Jeez. I am now cured of any desire to race in those things. Rob Simpson
I took 6th place in the Cat4/5 qualifier and got into the night race...which I got pulled from, so I guess you don’t have to mention that. Hunter Garrison
The Morning Amateur Twilight Criterium for Cat4/Cat5 race started out really well for me. Right off, I was able to get great position and held my line, kept moving up the whole race. Going into the turns however, the pace was inconsistent. A lot of riders rode into the turns, slowed down, then jumped out of the saddle to regain speed. Although I responded well to the change and kept crankin’. I felt the pace was a little slow compared to some other crits I had done earlier in the season…and I knew that I would have a lot left for the final up-hill finish. As we came into the last turn, I was around top 25, and there was a slight incline that led to finish with about 500 meters to go. I jumped the gun along with others going into the final straight and was fortunate enough to crack top 15. The result was great, considering it was the Twilight Qualifier. I missed qualifying for the evening race by 5 spots. However, K Sakai, notified me later that they had some openings available for the Evening Twilight Race. I gladly excepted the invitation. As most of us know, the Evening Twilight Race is one tough cookie. Right from the start I had terrible position. I am Cat 4 right now, and I was racing guys at the Elite Level (cat3 cat2 cat 1). No excuses, all hands down, for the effort that was given. My heart jumped right into the red zone and I was finished 12 minutes into the 35 minute race. It was a great experience for me, after the race I kept telling myself “One day.” My body is just not there yet. It was almost like I was never in the race. Matt Gordon
